Every claim below links to the place you can check it yourself.

Install on your Mac

  1. Open the downloaded What-Dinged.dmg.
  2. Drag What Dinged onto the Applications folder in the window that appears.
  3. Open What Dinged from Applications. macOS asks once whether you want to open an app downloaded from the internet: click Open.
  4. A welcome window appears and a bell shows up in your menu bar, near the clock. What Dinged starts with your Mac from now on; macOS may show a notice that it was added to Login Items, which is expected.
  5. In the welcome window, tick the browsers you use and click Add selected. Each browser opens its store page; click Add there to finish. You can reopen this list any time from Browser extensions in the What Dinged menu.

That's all there is to it. The next time something makes a sound, the bell fills in, and you can click it to see what made the sound.

Updating to a new version: if you're updating from version 1.0.2 or earlier, quit What Dinged and your browsers first, then drag the new version onto Applications. From version 1.0.3 on, you only need to quit What Dinged itself; your browsers can stay open.

Install on Windows

  1. If you chose the Microsoft Store, click Get or Install on the Store page and go straight to step 4. If you downloaded the installer instead, open What-Dinged-Windows.exe.
  2. Because What Dinged is new, Windows may show a brief SmartScreen notice for the installer for the first few weeks while it builds reputation. If you see it, the publisher listed will be Kimberly Bjers. Installing from the Microsoft Store skips this notice.
  3. What Dinged installs itself in a few seconds. It doesn't need an administrator password, and a welcome window appears when it's done.
  4. Look for the bell in the system tray, next to the clock. Windows tucks new tray icons under the ^ arrow, so drag the bell from there onto the taskbar to keep it in view.
  5. In the welcome window, tick the browsers you use and click Add selected. Each browser opens its store page; click Add there to finish. You can reopen this list any time from Browser extensions in the What Dinged menu.

What Dinged starts when you sign in to Windows; you can turn that off in its Settings. You'll find it in the Start menu and in Settings, Apps, Installed apps.

Browser extensions

Without an extension, browser sounds still show up under the browser's name. Add the free extension to see the exact tab and jump to it.

The Chrome extension also works in Brave, Arc, Opera and Vivaldi.

Safari on a Mac

The Safari extension is already included in the Mac app. Open Safari, choose Settings, then Extensions, and tick What Dinged. When Safari asks about website access, choose Always Allow on Every Website.

To check it's working, open What Dinged's Settings from the bell menu: each browser with the extension shows Connected.

Unlock the full version

Your 14-day trial starts the first time you open What Dinged, with everything working.

  1. Click Buy on this page, or choose Free trial: N days left. Buy… from the bell menu.
  2. After checkout, Polar sends you an order email with an Access purchase link. Your license key is shown on that page.
  3. Click the bell, choose Buy… (or Unlock What Dinged… after the trial), paste the key and click Activate.

The key is checked with Polar when you activate it and about once a week after; being offline never locks you out.

Leave a review

Reviews in the stores help other people decide whether What Dinged is right for them. If you have a minute, leave one. Each link opens the What Dinged listing, and reviews are on that page.

The Mac app isn't sold through an app store, so on a Mac the browser extension listings are the place to leave a review.

Remove What Dinged from a Mac

  1. Click the bell and choose Quit What Dinged.
  2. Drag What Dinged from Applications to the Trash.
  3. To remove its history too, delete the WhatDinged folder in your user Library, under Application Support.
  4. Remove the browser extension from each browser's extensions page.

Remove What Dinged from Windows

Open Settings, Apps, Installed apps, find What Dinged, and choose Uninstall. This removes the app, its Start menu entry and its sound history. Remove the browser extension from each browser's extensions page.
